Afghanistan
Over the past three decades, the people of Afghanistan have suffered through war, drought, civil unrest and Taliban rule—all of which left the country grossly indigent. Living standards of the Afghan people are among the poorest in the world due to shortages of housing, clean water, electricity, and jobs. Moreover, UNICEF estimates the adult literacy rate at a meager 36 percent. The fall of the Taliban in 2001 offered the opportunity for a more positive outlook, and RI has been there to facilitate critical community-based development initiatives that are empowering women and youth in particular to participate in their country’s economic, agricultural, political, and educational development future. |
