Sri Lanka
The tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean in December 2004 killed more than 30,000 Sri Lankans, destroyed nearly 100,000 homes and displaced 443,000 people. In the wake of the tsunami, around 200,000 people lost their jobs, among them fishermen whose fleets had been destroyed. The catastrophe added to the plight of a nation torn by decades of civil conflict that had already killed or displaced thousands of people. While there have been cease-fire agreements between the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Elam and the government, the peace process remains fragile and social exclusion based on ethnicity, language, religion and conflict remains a problem in the country. |
