Sudan: Darfur and South Sudan
The people of Sudan have suffered through generations of civil conflict since the country gained independence in 1956. The current conflict in Darfur has torn the country apart since February 2003 and has displaced over 2.5 million individuals within Sudan, forced over 220,000 to become refugees in neighboring counties, and killed over 300,000 civilians. In South Sudan, fighting, famine and disease during 21 years of civil war, has led to the death of more than 2 million people, forcing 600,000 to become refugees and displacing more than 4 million. In response to both crises, RI provides relief and development support to women, children and families struggling to survive each day with dignity. |
