RI has been present in Iran since the 1990 Roudbar earthquake that took 50,000 lives. Natural disaster has plagued Iran throughout RI’s tenure, including earthquakes in Qazvin, Bam and Zaran. As a result, RI’s projects in Iran have vigilantly addressed the crucial link between disaster relief and long-term development. In response to each disaster, RI has integrated immediate relief needs with sustainable strategies to provide meaningful interventions for the disaster-affected. Exemplifying this approach: in the 2003 Bam earthquake RI distributed food, water, blankets and medicine while also building shelters, schools, community centers, internet facilities, libraries and establishing a successful microcredit program. |
