Expanding poppy cultivation and a growing opium trade loom as Afghanistan’s most serious obstacles for economic development. RI has embarked on an applied research effort to ascertain the livelihood impact and market potential of various widely grown legume and vegetable crops as viable, legal alternatives to opium poppy. Initial conclusions prove highly encouraging.
