Ghabsha's Path to Self-Reliance Through Sweets

At 38 years old, Ghabsha’s life took a dramatic turn when she, along with her family, was forced to flee their home in Al Juba District, Marib, due to the devastating war in Yemen. They sought refuge in the Al Shaqman Camp in Marib Al-Wadi.

“Our lives have been completely upended by the conflict, leaving us weak and homeless,” Ghabsha shares.

With no work to turn to and the weight of financial instability pressing upon her, Ghabsha’s situation seemed bleak.

However, her story soon shifted from one of despair to hope.

Supported by the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF), Relief International delivered a lifeline to nearly 7,000 people like Ghabsha in the Marib Al-Wadi District. Through economic empowerment initiatives and gender-based violence services, our dedicated teams helped at-risk populations find stability.

Lacking formal education and professional skills did not stop Ghabsha from seeking a brighter future. She seized an opportunity provided by Relief International and enrolled in a 15-day pastry and sweets preparation course. This course was more than just an educational experience—it was a stepping stone toward a new livelihood.

“I was very happy when I received the empowerment kits. I immediately started making sweets and sold them to neighbors and school students.”

This initiative not only provided her family with much-needed income but also gave Ghabsha a renewed sense of accomplishment and self-reliance.

Ghabsha’s resilience also inspired her daughter, Saada. Despite facing challenges due to a congenital hand malformation, Saada pursued her own passion by joining an accessory-making course, also through Relief International. Saada discovered a talent for designing and making bracelets, which she now proudly shares with her peers, boosting her self-esteem and fostering inclusivity among her classmates.

Ghabsha’s efforts extend beyond economic survival. She has become a beacon of hope in her community.

“I have discovered hope and optimism in difficult circumstances. My journey proves that anyone can succeed and overcome obstacles with determination and access to resources. I hope to inspire others to know that empowerment and optimism can be found even in challenging circumstances.”

Ghabsha’s journey not only highlights her triumph but also how she has become a source of inspiration and hope for others around her.
