Reem’s Commitment to Her Community in War-Torn Sudan

The conflict in Sudanwhere nearly 3 million children are acutely malnourished—has brought into sharp focus the urgent need for humanitarian support

Even as the foundation of the country is shaken, one thing remains steadfast: the dedication of healthcare workers who are working against all odds to uplift communities in SUdan. Among them is Reem, a Relief International nutritionist who is restoring hope in her community.

Reem’s drive to make a meaningful difference has been a guiding force throughout her career.

“I have always been passionate about making a difference in people's lives, particularly those who are most vulnerable."

Reem speaks fondly of a moment in her work that has stayed with her. “A severely malnourished child came into our care. The situation was not looking hopeful, but we refused to give up on his treatment. We were determined that this child would have a future.” Today, he is a healthy boy who has a chance at life. “This was a moment where I stopped and thought, ‘Yes, we are making a difference in people’s lives.’”

But Reem’s efforts do not come without challenges. Security concerns due to ongoing conflict means we struggle to reach remote areas, and limited resources means communities face barriers to good healthcare,” Reem shares.

Despite these obstacles, Reem and her team remain resolute.

They coordinate with local authorities to ensure safe access to healthcare, use mobile clinics to reach isolated populations, and collaborate with local partners to enhance communities’ health and nutrition.

“By addressing both immediate and long-term needs, we aim to significantly reduce malnutrition rates among children”.

Education sessions around nutrition for families are a vital part of their approach to lasting solutions, alongside support for local agriculture and community gardens to improve food security.

The resilience of Reem’s colleagues is a constant source of inspiration to her. “The unwavering dedication and commitment of my colleagues is truly inspiring. Supporting each other emotionally is so important,” she shares as she describes how her team fosters a supportive environment where everyone feels supported and heard.

Reem is committed to supporting both her colleagues and the communities she works with in the future

“I aspire to lead innovative nutrition programs with the ultimate goal of ensuring that no child is ever born facing the possibility of hunger.”

Regarding the future of her country, Reem’s vision is clear: “I hope for a Sudan where everyone has access to quality healthcare and nutrition, regardless of their circumstances—a future of peace and stability.

To make this possible, Reem emphasizes the urgent need for ongoing support. “The situation in Sudan remains challenging, but your contributions can make a significant difference,” she says

“Thank you for standing with us. Please continue to stand with us.”

On World Humanitarian Day, you can stand with Reem and all our humanitarian by making a contribution.
