Hasad aged 45, has been grappling with lumbar and other intervertebral disc disorders, radiculopathy, and Cauda Equina Syndrome since 2009, stemming from an incorrect medical intervention. Enduring 17 medical operations and a seven-year stint as an in-patient at the hospital, Hasad also faces neuromuscular dysfunction in the bladder. Before his health challenges, he had a stable job as a tile and keystone foreman. 

Azra, 45, was once highly active in the job she enjoyed at the theatre. However, her life also took a drastic turn after the earthquake. The catastrophe caused a wardrobe to collapse on her, resulting in severe injuries to her knees. Diagnosed with a torn fiber under the knee, disintegrated cartilage tissue, and a burst meniscus, leaving her struggling to climb stairs and maintain balance while standing. 

Following the earthquake, the couple found themselves seeking refuge in a temporary housing container, where Hasad was confined to sleeping on the floor for four months, adding to his already severe back pains. 

January 2024 marked the beginning of a transformative journey as they started to engage with MUDEM, a local refugee support association that works in partnership with Relief International. The couple was now receiving crucial support tailored to their individual needs. 

Hasad underwent medical counseling, participated in psycho-social support sessions, and received crutches. He expressed newfound hope, relishing in his ability to stroll around the container area—a seemingly small pleasure he never thought possible. 

That’s not all. With ongoing sessions planned, our teams are aiming to stabilize Hasad’s condition even further, focusing on strengthening his muscles.  

For Azra, MUDEM provided medical counseling and crutches. The impact has been profound as she reports decreased pain and improved mobility since she is able to regularly exercise now. She is now looking forward to strengthening her right leg as she prepares for surgery.   

Through perseverance and the support of organizations like Relief International and MUDEM, Azra and Hasad navigate the challenges of their medical conditions with courage and resilience, inspiring others along the way.
