Breaking the Silence: Esma's Journey

In a world significantly influenced by sound, Esma’s story stands as a testament to resilience and the power of overcoming personal obstacles.

Living with hearing impairment since childhood, Ema’s journey exemplifies courage, determination, and the transformative impact of support from dedicated teams such as Relief International in Türkiye and partners MUDEM.

Esma, aged 42, has faced the challenges of hearing impairment since an early age. Although the impairment resulted from a fever during childhood, it went undetected until she reached six years old. Despite the difficulties, Esma displayed remarkable tenacity, earning a Bachelor of Arts in both Management and Theology. Participating in courses and socializing presented significant hurdles due to her hearing difficulty. But her unwavering dedication led her to become a teacher for four years.

Unfortunately, the increasing challenges that her hearing impairment presented eventually led her to resign from her position. Her fear of being unable to hear emergency crews during the earthquake added to her anxiety, highlighting the daily struggles faced by those with hearing impairments.

In early January 2024, Esma crossed paths with MUDEM, a local refugee support association that works in partnership with Relief International. Esma received support tailored to her needs. Central to this support was providing a hearing device, transforming Esma’s daily life and reshaping her vision for the future.

Now equipped with her new hearing device, Esma no longer fears venturing outside. She can now navigate her surroundings, engage with students, and pursue professional opportunities with renewed confidence. She recently started a new teaching internship, which she carries with positivity and joy, underscoring how accessible technology can dramatically increase quality of life and outcomes.

Looking ahead, Esma aspires to secure a governmental position. She is now preparing for the examination, fueled by the belief that her hearing impairment will no longer be a barrier to her success.
