How Mohamed is Working Against All Odds in Sudan

Mohamed’s drive to help other people led him to Relief International, where he now plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services in Sudan, one of the world’s most dangerous locations.

“I have a deep desire for supporting people in need and was driven to fulfil this by doing direct humanitarian work,” he shares.

Mohammed is a health officer for RI. From Sudan himself, he is relentless in his commitment to creating change in his country.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has created immense obstacles to accessing healthcare, with almost all facilities operating under severe strain.

“The unrest makes it difficult for communities to access healthcare facilities, which are already stretched thin with limited supplies."

Every day brings new challenges, as the dangers the community faces are unpredictable and constantly changing. “Just last month, we tragically lost our ambulance driver, Musa, who was shot while returning with a patient from the maternity hospital.”

Despite these daunting challenges, Mohamed remains inspired by the dedication of his colleagues.

“The commitment of the team around me is truly inspiring.”

One standout example he says, is Awad, a medical assistant at the Zamzam health facility, whose integrity has been crucial to the well-being of his community. Awad goes above and beyond for his patients, staying by their side and offering constant reassurance and compassion.”

However, even though healthcare heroes like Mohamed and Awad are remarkably resilient, working in such high-stress conditions inevitably takes a toll on caregivers’ mental health. Mohamed and his team cope by maintaining a sense of hope and purpose and supporting each other through the tough times.

“We stay focused on our work and maintain strong connections with the community. By listening to and supporting each other, we stay positive, despite the challenges.”

Staying focused and supporting one another helps the team in Sudan do their best work.

“When Mariam, a local community member went into labor, our team immediately recognized that she was facing complications due to exhaustion,” Mohamed recalls. “Without missing a beat, the team sprang into action. They understood the urgency and quickly administered intravenous fluids to boost her energy levels and support her through the labor. The entire medical team stayed by her side, providing continuous support, encouragement, and expert care. Within a short time, Mariam’s labor progressed rapidly, and she delivered her baby safely.”

Mohamed speaks fondly of Mariam, describing her unwavering determination and the vital role that timely healthcare support played in ensuring a safe delivery. “Our team of midwives made sure that both Mariam and her baby were stable and comfortable, providing everything they needed for a healthy start. Every member of the hospital staff played a crucial role, from the moment Mariam arrived to the moment she held her baby in her arms,” he reflects.

Looking to the future, Mohamed is driven by a vision of a more resilient and healthier Sudan.

“I want to continue supporting communities and contributing to critical humanitarian work as a leader within the healthcare field.”

On World Humanitarian Day, Mohamed’s message reflects the gravity of the situation in Sudan. “The Sudanese people are enduring immense suffering due to this war, and we risk losing our country,” he warns. His plea for international support reminds us of our collective responsibility to help a nation that is enduring an unrelenting nightmare

As Mohamed and his colleagues continue their tireless efforts, they need our support more than ever.
