Triumph Over Adversity: Selim’s Story

Seyit, 38,  has been living with spina bifida syndrome since birth. Seyit has faced numerous hurdles stemming from childhood, enduring the physical and emotional toll of spina bifida and being a victim of bullying at school.

His life shifted when he was accepted to university to pursue computer programming. It was here that he found solace and friendship, receiving unwavering support from his peers.

Refusing to be limited by his disability, Seyit embraced an active university life, immersing himself in basketball and becoming an integral part of the university’s disability community. After graduating with his degree, he became an accountant, excited to kickstart his career.

But despite his run of success, the aftermath of the earthquake presented new challenges, particularly in securing suitable employment and a stable income.

This presented financial issues for Seyit, adding immense pressure as he is the sole provider for his wife and daughter, while living with his brother-in-law, who is also disabled.

In January 2024, Seyit found hope through the support of MUDEM, a local refugee support association that works in partnership with Relief International.

Recognizing the needs of the household, MUDEM provided crucial support, including medical counseling, tailored activities to strengthen Selim’s arms, and psychosocial support sessions to navigate the emotional toll of their circumstances.

Efforts are currently underway to procure a commode chair, a resource that will undoubtedly enhance Seyit’s mobility and independence. We are also assisting Seyit in navigating employment opportunities to help him regain the job satisfaction he once had.

With the collaboration of implementing partners like MUDEM, Relief International remains steadfast in our joint commitment to support families who are overcoming the lasting impact of the earthquake.
