Zakat FAQs
What is Zakat?
Traditionally, the Zakât Al Maal is the obligatory almsgiving for Muslims that is given to those who need it most. As one of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat is a religious duty for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth to help those in need.
Why does Relief International accept Zakat?
Relief International works with vulnerable communities in 12 Muslim-majority countries and territories around the world, providing desperately needed health and wellbeing services. By accepting Zakat, we are able to support even more people in these communities; working side by side with them to save lives, build greater resilience, and promote long-term health and wellbeing.
Where will my donation go?
Annually, Relief International considers projects for Zakat donations. Zakat donations made to Relief International will go towards delivering projects in Muslim-majority communities in the following countries and territories: Afghanistan, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory, Pakistan, the Philippines, Syria, Sudan, Türkiye and Yemen. During the holy month of Ramadan 2024, all Zakat funds will go to our work in the occupied Palestinian territory.

How does Relief International work with partners?
We collaborate with various organizations to deliver development projects and provide humanitarian aid. Seeking Zakat from Muslims is not meant to replace smaller or more specialized organizations already active in this field. Rather, it offers Zakat givers who wish to assist and contribute to organizations working with communities most impacted by conflict, climate change and disaster the chance to do so. Your Zakat contributions enable us to sustain our partnerships with organizations that facilitate the localization of our work.
